Hinsdale Lose Heartbreaker to
Undefeated Conference Leaders
This was one of the most
exciting games of the season.
York came into this game
undefeated and with a big
reputation. Hinsdale knew that
they had to play very well to
have any chance and they did
just that. The Red Devils
started well taking an early
lead in the first after Jon
Spacapan was knocked home by Pat
Foley-a combination which has
produced so many runs this
season.
Jack Gilbert took the mound for
Hinsdale and saw his first
pitch, a fastball, dispatched
390 feet over the center field
fence. Unaffected by this
monster blow, Gilbert carried on
and pitched flawlessly through
the rest of the inning and the
next two innings. Hinsdale
managed to take the lead in the
third when Foley’s hit turned
into a triple after a defensive
error and scored Chris Bobo.
In the fourth, York replied with
a triple with two men on to
score two. Gilbert then worked
his way out of the jam to keep
their lead to one.
In the fifth, Jon Spacapan
walked and Ryan Daspin brought
him home on two outs. All tied
up at 3.
After no score in the 6th,
Hinsdale came to bat in the 7th
but couldn’t establish a late
lead to keep the pressure on
York. With Gilbert still
pitching for the Red Devils in
the bottom of the seventh, York
had men on 2nd and
3rd after a walk, a hit and a
double steal. In order to
create the force, Hinsdale put
the next batter and loaded the
bases. With a full count, it
came down to one pitch. It was
a ball which narrowly missed
low. York had a 4-3 win on a
walk.
It wasn’t the best way to lose a
game but the overall team effort
from Hinsdale was
unquestionable. They had played
very well and could hold their
heads high going into game 2. |
