Red Devils Stung by Hornets
Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale
South battled it out over two
hours but it seemed as though
the game was played over four
seasons. The teams had to
contend with rain, overcast
skies, bright sunshine and
distant lightening bolts before
it was all over.
Jared Kreger started for Central
and South came out , immediately
putting two runs on the board.
Central responded quickly
however with RBI’s from Sean
Houlihan and Jack Gilbert which
evened the score and an error
from the Hornets infield allowed
the Gilbert to score the go
ahead run. This lead was
extended in the third when
Houlihan was handed a base on
balls with bases loaded, after
singles from Pat Foley and Ryan
Daspin.
Jack Gilbert. who had replaced
Kreger on the mound in the
second looked to be making easy
work of the South line up but
then with two outs in the third,
his pitching became
uncharacteristically erratic and
having loaded the bases, he
walked in two, before recording
the third out. This evened the
score at 4-4. Gilbert later
blamed his inconsistency on a
wet ball.
Thankfully Daspin, who replaced
Gilbert in the fourth, didn’t
have the same problem and
steadied the ship for Central.
South were scoreless for the two
innings he pitched and Central
re-established their lead in the
fourth and went further ahead in
the sixth, both on Foley RBI’s.
Chris Bobo came in to pitch for
Central in the sixth and pitched
well but the Hornets found their
offence once more and chalked up
three quick runs to grab the
lead back. Unfortunately, the
Devils were unable to do
anything in their last at-bat
and went home losers in a game
that really could have gone
either way. |
