HC wins season opener 7-3
On a sunny but frigid opening day, the Red Devils scored a team victory against Oak Lawn. Scott Zender started on the mound pitching two innings, allowing 1 hit, 5 walks , 2 strike outs and 2 runs.
Central jumped out to an early lead when Rob Bellusci laced one to 3rd base that was too hot to handle. He stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a single by David Kiyosaki. Oak Lawn responded with 2 runs in the first with a bases loaded suicide squeeze bunt. The second inning was scoreless, fueled by a great stop at short by John Duffy who fired to Charlie Herr who made a great stretch to get the runner at first base. Central tied the game at 2 in the 3rd inning when Kiyosaki scored on a sac bunt by Josh Camalick. The 3rd featured a double play fielded by Mike Rogowski, to Brendan Sullivan, to Herr for the third out. After a scoreless 4th inning, the Red Devils heated up in the 5th racking up 4 runs. Kiyosaki singled to score the speedy Sean O’Grady. Rogowski singled and Kiyosaki crossed the plate. Next, Camalick hit a deep ball to right field scoring Rogowski and Herr finished the job by batting in Camalick to jump ahead 6-2. Oak Lawn scored 1 in the 5th which ended on a diving catch by O’Grady in center field.
David Kiyosaki pitched 3 strong innings allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, 4 strike-outs and just 1 run. Central loaded the bases in the 6th but were unable to convert. Charlie Herr closed out the game in the 6th inning with 1 hit and a strikeout. The game was called after 6 innings due to impending darkness.
