Pitching, Hitting, Defense
a balanced attack leads to an opening day victory
Solid pitching, abundant hitting and timely defense all contributed to the Frosh’s opening day win at Oak Lawn in clear but cold conditions.
Al Kirk start the offense with a deep double to right center in the first but did not score.
Will Pahos started and pitched two scoreless innings. He was aided in the second by an inning ending 5-3 double play (Steveo Kraynak Jason Rafferty).
In the top of the third the Devils scored six runs, highlighted by an Alex Tufano 2 RBI single and an RBI single by Peter Marquardt. Kirk contributed with a deep sac fly to left center to score another run.
Kirk (1 inning), Jack Hellwig (3) and Kraynak (1) combined for five innings of pitching to hold the Spartans to 4 runs, despite a major league strike zone.
There were more highlights in the later innings but my pen froze and they were not recorded! Congrats to the Freshmen for getting their first victory under their belts!!!!
