Devils…….   a thorn in the Lions’ paw

The freshmen Red Devils won two at LT today as perfect baseball weather finally arrived.  The nice weather seemed to wake up the frosh bats as well.

GAME ONE
Hinsdale jumped out to a quick lead in the first game with three runs in the top of the first.  Jack Hellwig lead off with a walk and scored two batters later on Alex Kirk’s first of six hits on the day (6 for 8 with 6 RBI, including two triples and a double).  Stevo Kraynak drove Kirk in with a single, and Jason Rafferty followed with his own RBI single.  The Devils plated three more in the second.  Mac Burridge and Michael Discipio (5 for 8 on the day) scored on a Kirk triple.    Kirk drove Discipio in again with a single in the fourth.  The Devils scored four more runs in the sixth.

Will Pahos started and pitched 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, no walks and two earned runs.  Peter Marquardt came in to record the last two outs.

GAME TWO
Game two was a seesaw affair.  LT took the lead in the bottom of the first and had the Red Devils chasing them until the sixth, when Mike Rogers lead off with a walk, Burridge singled, followed by a Hellwig RBI single.  Kirk then rapped his second triple of the day for 2 RBI.  With the scored tied in the seventh, Rafferty (who hit a BOMB to left field in the second and was 3 for 4 in the game) lead off with a single.  Pahos moved him to second with a sac bunt, and Mike Rogers drove him in with a double to left for what turned out to be the winning run

Kolby Ourada pitched the first three.  Kraynak followed with two scoreless innings.  Hellwig pitched the sixth, and Rafferty closed out the game with three quick outs in the seventh, including one strike out.

The defense was generally solid today, but there were four plays that stood out.  In the first game in the bottom of the fifth, Kraynak, playing third, dove to his left and snagged a tough ground ball, recovered and threw to second to force the runner to end an LT threat.  Also in the first game Charlie Hetke handled a very tough line shot to left.

In the second game Rafferty, playing first, made a nice play on a foul ball along the fence in front to the Devils’ dugout. Later in the game in the bottom of the sixth with the lead on the line, Burridge made an outstanding read of a line shot to his right and laid out to make the catch to shut LT down.
