Devil Frosh Top Hornets at Home

Hinsdale South got an early 1-0 lead on Friday in Central, but the Red Devils fought back and took a commanding 7-1 lead into the sixth.  After giving up a run in the first, lefty Peter Marquardt held the Hinsdale South in check through five innings, scattering four hits and two walks, while striking out two.  He was aided by a nice diving catch by Charlie Hetke in left in the top of the third with two out and runners on first and second.

The Red Devils offense got into gear in the second.  Stevo Kraynak (1-4 RBI) lead off with a single and looked liked he scored on a Jimmy Kallas (2-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) “double”.  But for some reason the ump ruled the play a ground rule double even though the Hornet right fielder dove into the weeds searching for the ball and never put his hands up, costing Kallas a triple and the RBI.  Hetke did bring Kraynak in with an infield out in the next at bat, but the Devils ended up getting only one run.

In the third Mike Discipio (3-3) lead off with a single.  Mac Burridge) (2-4) singled and Al Kirk (sac RBI) reach on an error.  Alex Tufano (2-3, 2 doubles, 3 RBI) doubled to score two runs.  Kraynak followed with an RBI infield out and Mike Rogers (sac, 2 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The Devil’s two runs in the fourth scored on a sac fly by Kirk and another double by Tufano.  In the sixth the frosh benefited from four walks and a Kallas double to score four.

The frosh seemed to lose their focus some in the last two innings. Cooper Travis relieved Marquardt and the Hornets scored three runs in the sixth on a hit, a couple of errors, a walk and another hit.  South scored five in the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the early Red Devil lead.
