Red Devils make history, Morse comes up grand!
One of the most exciting baseball games ever played at Hinsdale Central took place against cross town rival Hinsdale South. Like two champion prize fighters each team measured one another for 3 innings, then for the next 5 innings went toe to toe, punch for punch. Each time the Hornets went ahead the Devils pulled up even with them. It was in the bottom of the 8th that the Hornets couldn’t restrain the Devils any longer as Brett Morse stroked the knockout punch ending the game with a grand slam home run.
Nick Kurash stepped up big and pitched 7 solid innings, striking out 5 and giving up 3 runs. Charlie Thomas came into the game in the eighth inning and was the victim of only 1 unearned run and was then supported by some great defense. With a run in and a runner on 3rd with no outs, the infield was pulled in on the grass. The third batter of the inning hit a ball which looked like it would go between Drew Bailey and Brett Morse, but Bailey lunged to snag the ball and throw to Morse for one out. The next batter hit a pop up to Morse for the second out and the next batter put a scare in the crowd by flying out to Tobi Adeyemi at the fence in center field.
The Red Devils scored their first two runs in the fifth inning when Andrew Nicholas (3 for 5) singled, followed by Adeyemi who reached second on an error and Nicholas moved to third. A Brett Suchy (2 for 5, 2 RBI’s) groundout to the second baseman scored Nicholas and moved Adeyemi to third. Mark Noth came to the plate next and hit a sharp single to center scoring Adeyemi to tie the score at 2 2. In the seventh inning Morse reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs then took second on a wild pitch and scored on Colin Cimala’s single, tying the score at 3 3.
Then came the fateful eighth inning. With the Red Devils behind 4 3, Bailey coaxed a walk and with 2 outs, Adeyemi lashed a shot that ricochet off of the pitcher’s leg to reach safely at first with pinch runner Kris Leksas stopping at second. Suchy stepped up, having hit the ball hard all game and sent a shot down the left field line for a double scoring Leksas and moving Adeyemi to third. Noth was intentionally walked to get to Morse who made the Hornets pay when he hit a 1 1 count over the left centerfield fence for a dramatic grand slam home run and a 8 4 Red Devil win.
