Quirke, Thomas hold Pirates at bay;
Offense ignites again
The Proviso East Pirates proved to be worthy opponents for 5 innings before the Red Devils set off the hitting fireworks in the 6th inning. Kevin Quirke pitched four and a third innings striking out 3 allowing 5 hits and two runs to gain his first starting victory of the year. Charlie Thomas pitched the remainder of the fifth and all of the sixth inning to shut down the Panthers for his first save of the season. Catcher Mark Noth and 2nd baseman Drew Bailey were a lethal combination cutting down two Panther runners trying to steal second base.
On the offensive side it was a slow start with a single run coming in the fourth inning on a Colin Cimala home run. In the fifth inning Andrew Nicholas reached first with a walk, Tobi Adeyemi came up and jacked a two run home run to put the Red Devils ahead 3 2. In the sixth inning it was Cimala who ignited the fireworks with a single followed by Slamin’ Sam Katz who hit a ground rule double. Successive walks to Alex Bellusci and Bailey loaded the bases and forced in Cimala to score. Nicholas followed with a single driving in Katz & Bellusci then Adeyemi hit a double into the right centerfield gap that scored Bailey and Nicholas. Up next Brett Suchy walked and went to second on a passed ball followed by Noth who lashed a double down the left field line scoring Adeyemi and Suchy. Cimala batting for the second time in the inning hit another single scoring Noth, then Bellusci and Bailey walked for the second time in the inning to load the bases. Nicholas up for the second time roped a double to the right centerfield gap scoring Cimala, Bellusci and Bailey. Adeyemi up for the second time in the inning hit a single to score Nicholas and end the scoring for the game and a 15 2 victory. |
