Lamb tames, Morse mashes and Thomas closes out Mustangs
It was a tale of two different halves in the game against the Morton Mustangs who jumped to an 8 2 lead after 4 innings. Then enters Willy (Ba Ba) Lamb in the 4th inning, who proceeded to shut down the highly potent Morton offense over the next 3 innings, giving up 1 run striking out 2 and just keeping the whole batting order out of balance. Charlie Thomas came into a pressured 7th inning with the Red Devils ahead 10 9 with a man on 1st with no outs and proceeded to dominate the next 3 batters, striking out the best hitter on the team to get his 4th save of the season. Drew Bailey started the game and unfortunately was the victim of a hot hitting Mustang lineup along with a couple of fielding errors, yielding 4 earned and 4 unearned runs over 3 innings.
The offense took some time to warm up but got started in the 3rd inning with Brett Suchy hitting a single, then with one out Mark Noth took 4 straight balls for a walk. With two outs, Brett Morse stepped to the plate and lashed a single up the middle to score Suchy, and advance Noth to third. Tobi Adeyemi was at bat when the pitcher threw a wild pitch which scored Noth. In the 5th inning Colin Cimala hit a single to right field then Morse hit another single up the middle. As Adeyemi was batting, the pitcher threw wildly to first in an errant pick off attempt and as the ball went up the right field line in foul territory, Cimala scored and Morse went to 3rd. Jack Dinardo walked, followed by Alex Bellusci who singled, scoring Morse. Lamb up next, doubled down the left field line which scored Dinardo. In the sixth inning with the game momentum on the side of the Red Devils, Suchy singled, followed by Noth who hit a scorching shot that the shortstop couldn’t handle for a single. Cimala then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The hot hitting Morse then laced a single to center scoring Suchy and Noth. Eric Wroble entered the game with Pujols like confidence and blasted a double over the center fielder’s head scoring Morse which pulled the Red Devils within one run of the Mustangs. Two batters later Bellusci was hit by a pitch and awarded first, followed by Lamb who singled scoring Wrobel to tie the score at 9. In the 7th inning against Morton’s ace pitcher, with one out, Cimala reached base on an error by the 3rd baseman. Morse launched a drive over the right fielder’s head just missing a home run with the ball hitting the fence for a double moving Cimala to 3rd. Wroble stepped to the plate and with a 2 2 count, hit a towering drive to deep left center field for a sacrifice fly to score Cimala and proved to be the winning run in this 10 9 victory. Andrew Nichols also tripled and singled in the game. |
