Red Devils lose 9-4 to Downers Grove North

Defensive errors, mental mistakes and lack of hitting led to the Red Devils’ loss to DGN.  After a scoreless inning in the top of the first, DGN scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  DGN’s lead-off hitter reached base on an error and then scored on a subsequent double.

In the top of the second inning Mark Noth, Colin Cimala and Brett Morse had consecutive singles with Noth scoring on Morse’s hit.  Cimala then scored on Alex Bellusci’s groundout and Morse scored on Drew Bailey’s single to give the Red Devils a 3--1 lead.  DGN tied the score in the bottom of the second inning scoring two unearned runs on two errors.

The Red Devils’ bats were quiet in the third inning, but DGN’s weren’t.  The first two batters reached base with infield singles and advanced to third base and second base, respectively, on a passed ball.  Both runners scored on consecutive groundouts to give DGN a 5-3 lead.  DGN increased their lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning scoring an unearned run on a walk, wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and groundout.

In the top of the sixth inning, Cimala singled, advanced to second on Morse’s groundout and scored on Sam Katz’s single to cut the lead to 6-4.  In the bottom of the sixth, DGN put the game away scoring three unearned runs on four walks and a single.

Nick Kurash took the loss, pitching five and two-thirds innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs.  On the day, DGN scored seven unearned runs.

The Red Devils had seven hits in the game.  Bailey and Cimala were each 2 for 3 and Noth, Morse and Katz each had a single.

The Red Devils face Morton on Thursday at Morton.
