York Beats Sophs; Take Series

The Red Devils came up a run short on Tuesday, losing to York 7-6.  The Dukes scored three runs in the first and two in the second on just two hits as Red Devil starting pitcher Bill Auriemma struggled with his control.  Central answered York with three first inning runs of their own.  Catcher Grant Slesser’s (2-3) double scored centerfielder Mike Imke (2-4).  Imke had led off the game with a double.  An error and Rich Brennan’s (2-3) RBI single accounted for the other first inning runs.  Imke’s second double of the game drove in Central’s run in the bottom of the second.

Brennan, aided by two sparkling plays by shortstop Zach Leathers, pitched 5 strong innings in relief of Auriemma, giving up only two sixth inning runs. Hinsdale closed to within a run in the bottom of the sixth, as second baseman Brock Piche walked, stole second and ultimately scored on Jared White’s RBI groundout.  The Red Devils let a golden opportunity slip by in the bottom of the seventh – leaving the tying run at second with one out.
