Auriemma Pitches Gem, Devils Take Opener 2-1
Billy Auriemma tossed a complete game three hitter as the Devils took the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader with Glenbard West 2-1. Auriemma did not walk a batter while striking out 5. He took a perfect game into the 5th and a shut out into the 7th in his strongest outing of the season.
The Red Devils scored their first run in the 2d. Richie Brennan (1-2) led off the inning with a single. Brock Piche forced him at second, then stole second and scored on a two out single by Garrett Cook (1-2).
Central picked up an important insurance run in the 6th Grant Slesser (1-3) doubled to start the frame. Pinch runner Harrison Dahl advanced to third on Brennan’s sacrifice bunt (believed to be the first bunt of Brennan’s career including little league!) and scored on Piche’s perfectly executed squeeze bunt.
Glenbard West made it interesting, nicking Auriemma for an unearned run in the top of the 7th and stranding runners on the corners as third baseman Matt Meyer made a nice pick-up on a tough ground ball to end the game |
