The Red Devils routed an outmanned Proviso West team 22-1 in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. Mike Imke, Grant Slesser and Troy Laing each had three hits in the sophomores’ biggest offensive showing of the season.
Imke (3-5, 2B, 3B,3 runs, 3 RBI) led off the first inning with a double and moved to third on an infield out and scored on a passed ball. Bill Auriemma (2-3, 3 runs, 2 BB, 1 RBI) reignited the rally with a sharp single to center. Slesser (3-4, 3 runs, 3 RBI, 1 BB), and Matt Murray (2-4, 1 run) followed with singles scoring Auriemma. Pinch runner Garrett Cook scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball.
After adding four more runs in the second inning, the Red Devils exploded for eleven runs in the third. With one out Laing (3-4, 4 runs, 3 RBI) tripled and scored an Imke single. Auriemma walked, and Slesser singled. The next three hitters reached on errors to open the floodgates. Lang, Imke and Slesser also recorded their second hits of the inning.
Matt Murray started the game on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit while striking out seven to earn the victory. Jared White pitched the final two innings allowing an unearned run without giving up a hit. |
