Good time for a grand slam

Hinsdale Central slugger Brett Morse's extra-inning intuition Wednesday was more than a feeling against Hinsdale South. In front of a raucous crowd, the Iowa football recruit hit a walk-off grand slam for an 8-4 eight-inning Downers Grove South sectional semifinal victory.

The Red Devils (23-10) were down to their last out with one on in the eighth. Tobi Adeyemi singled, and Brett Suchy followed with an RBI double. Mark Noth then was walked intentionally to bring up Morse.

"Once there were two out in the inning, I told my buddy, 'I have a feeling,'" said Morse. "It was weird. He threw a fastball outside. I had my hands back and was ready for it."

Hinsdale South (19-19) used Carl Fiebig and Dom Tardi solo homers to take one-run leads in the fifth and seventh innings.

"This was the best high school baseball game I've ever been a part of," said Hornets shortstop Joe Buonavolanto, who doubled for a 4-3 lead in the eighth but couldn't score from third base with no outs.

"We battled hard. We could have probably got another run in, but we can't say 'what if?' anymore. They got it done."
