Hinsdale Central and Lyons set up an enticing Tuesday showdown when they split a Saturday doubleheader in La Grange.

After Hinsdale Central won 6-3 in Game 1 and Lyons took the nightcap 14-2, the teams remained tied in the loss column as they battle for first place in the West Suburban Silver. They very well could decide the league title Tuesday.

In Game 1, Lyons lefty Kyle Corcoran walked three and hit two batters, and the Lions committed two errors in the first inning as the Red Devils scored three runs. Mark Noth then cracked a three-run homer in the top of the second.

Josh Heller, seeing his first varsity action on the mound, came on in the third for Lyons and gave up just one hit the rest of the way. The Lions scored twice in the third with Justin Birks getting an RBI single, and Grant Fillipitch's RBI single in the sixth pulled Lyons within 6-3.

Kasey Ourada allowed 10 hits, walked six and struck out four for Hinsdale Central (16-2, 6-2).
In the second game, Lyons (15-4, 9-2) pounded three pitchers for 13 hits en route to a mercy-rule win. With two outs in the third, Fillipitch cranked a three-run homer as the Lions scored five runs. In the fourth, they batted around as Dan Weston had a two-run double and Justin Birks, Brian Dunne and Casey McMurray (3-for-4, two runs) had RBI singles.

"[In Game 1] we had a couple errors, we didn't make a routine play, and then it took Corcoran 25 pitches to get out of the inning,'' Lyons coach George Ushella said. "We left two guys on in the third, and then they got a double play [in the sixth]. Heller gave us five strong innings, and Weston pitched well in Game 2.''

Weston gave up three hits, walked three and struck out eight for the Lions, who came in hitting .378 and raised that average.

"Our bats have been coming around,'' McMurray said. "We have a lot of confidence; we feel we can hit anyone.''

Right fielder McMurray had two highlight-film catches in Game 2. In the second, he ran full speed to nab Brett Morse's tailing pop-up. In the third, he went to right center to snare Andrew Nichols' liner.
