Broncos Bow to Devils in Extra Innings with an Extra Nice Victory
After 9 long innings the Hinsdale Central Red Devils prevailed in a 4-3 victory over the Montini Catholic Broncos on a windy March day.
Offensively Colin Cook kicked things off in the 2nd inning with a double and moved to 3rd by Brett Morse’s ground out to the second baseman. Mark Noth hit a chopper to the pitcher when Cook got caught in a rundown between home and third. Noth moved to second and Eric Binder followed with a hard driving single up the middle scoring Noth.
In the third inning, Dustin Reznicek with his quick speed, reached second on an error by the shortstop and scored on a Dan Portschy sharp single to left. Brett Morse walked in the 4th inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Binder reached first with an error on the second baseman while Morse executed a double steal and scored the third Devil run.
With the score tied at the end of seven, the Devils secured the victory in the 9th. Reznicek reached first on a single and advanced to second on a walk to Portschy. Colin Cimala hit a clutch single to center scoring Reznicek, giving the Devils the final lead.
Binder was the starting pitcher for the Red Devils throwing three strong innings. Binder faced 12 batters, striking out 4 and gave up only 1 unearned run. He kept the Broncos off balance with his mix of a curve ball, fast ball, slider and change up. Nick Kurash stepped up and pitched the next 4 innings, facing 16 batters, striking out 5, with 2 runs, one unearned. Nick’s effective combo of a fast ball, curve ball, change up and splitter got the job done. Rick Berdelle came to the mound in the 8th and 9th innings with his usual style of accuracy and off-speed pitches, facing 6 batters and shutting down the Broncos while earning the save.
Standout defensive plays included a 5-4-3 double play in the 4th started by Berdelle to Portschy to Cook. Connor Lind made 2 unassisted put outs from short. Cimala ended the game by gunning down a Bronco runner on an attempt to steal second. |
