On a frigid, gray day the Hinsdale Central Varsity opened their season by leading Oak Lawn 3 to 1 after 4 innings in a game halted by darkness in the top of the fifth.
Oak Lawn silenced the crowd with a lead off home run but after that it was all Red Devils. Doug Pilcher struck out 4, walked 2 and gave up only one other hit in 3 innings of work. Crafty lefty Anthony Fontas preserved the victory with a scoreless fourth.
The bats were silent until the third when Mark Noth singled and scampered to third on Ricky Berdelle's hard hit double. After a walk to Connor Lind, Dustin Reznicek scored 2 with a sharp single up the middle. Dan Portschy plated another with a rocket up the middle.
The Devils looked great as catcher Colin Cimala snared a popup from his knees at the fence, Pilcher tagged out a runner at third following a quick relay from Lind on a throw from right fielder Brett Morse to squelch a fourth inning rally, and Portschy made a bare-handed pick up firing to first baseman Colin Cook on a do-or-die play..
Everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and a great year.
