HINSDALE LOSES HEARTBREAKER
The Hinsdale Central Red Devils season ended too soon when the Nazareth Roadrunners rallied for 2 runs in the seventh inning to win a tense, nailbiter 2 to 1.
The Red Devils fought valiantly, but were unable to capitalize on several opportunities as the Roadrunners played flawlessly.
Captain Doug Pilcher pitched magnificently in what may be his last appearance on the bump, yielding only 3 hits, whiffing 6 and allowing only 1 earned run.
The Devil D struck in the first when Chad Bisnette snared a liner and threw to first baseman Colin Cook who made a diving tag to complete the double play. Pilcher was dominant striking out the last hitter in the second to stop a Roadrunner threat and cheered when Garrett Sosnovich threw a strike to Andrew Nicholas who applied the slap tag to end the sixth.
The Devils had baserunners on Dustin Reznicek, Mark Noth and Brett Morse hits but could not score against Naz's ace Ryan Lisak who pitched a great game. Nazareth defenders made several great diving and jumping plays on line drives to second and a Dan Portschy bullet to center to open the fifth. After a walk to Noth, Colin Cook hit a towering drive that hit the top of the fence in right for a double inches from what would have been a game winning homer. The Devils were unable to score but grabbed the lead in the sixth.
Biz opened with a single and Sos reached on a fielders choice. Morse followed with blast to the gap which chased Sos home. Andrew Nicholas followed with a drive to the leftfielder who fired to second for a double play.
After a single, walk and misplayed bunt loaded the bases, Nazareth coaxed an RBI walk and sac fly, before fireman Nick Kurash K'd the last batter.
Dan Portschy led off the bottom of the seventh with a single but could not advance as the Devils season slipped away.
The High School sports careers of the seniors is in the record books but will live long in their memories. The Red Devil fans salute and thank the 2005 team for a tremendous season. We remember all the time you have spent trying to improve your games over the off season. The Red Devils wanted more but learned a lot along the way. We applaud the way that you fought hard and gave your best at all times.
Congratulations and Good Luck
