Grez, Schultz Shine as Seniors Say Farewell
Mike Grzelakowski stole 3 bases, scored 3 times and made a running catch at the rightfield wall and Tom Schultz played the game of his life, knocking in 2, scoring 2, tallying 2 singles and making spectacular plays in the field including a diving tag to end the game as the Hinsdale Central Senior Class of 05 was victorious in their final home game 12 to 2.
Inspired by his Mother's throwing from the mound in the pre-game senior/parent ceremonies, Rick Berdelle noticed a flaw in his delivery. After discussing it with his Dad in their walk around the bases, Rick made a subtle change and hurled a no hitter for 5 and a third innings. After a few cheap hits Rick walked off with a complete game victory allowing 1 run, 2 hits and sending 8 to grab some bench. Hawk and DJ would be proud.
After a sluggish start which featured a Berdelle double in the second the Devils were able to shake off the effects of watching their Mom's form and getting some last minute baserunning tips from their Dads, the Devils grabbed the lead in the third when Connor Lind doubled down the leftfield line and scored on a passed ball.
After Grez and Berdelle walked and stole their way around the bases, Schultz hit a booming sac fly to left and Connor Lind dented the right center fence with a double and Dustin Reznicek singled to score 3.
Eric Binder led off the fifth with a ball to short moved up on Grez's walk and pinch runner Charlie Thomas scored on Berdelle's sac fly. Schultz scorched an rbi sigle to right, followed by the Daily Double Lind and Rez walking which set up a Chad Bisnette sac fly for the fifth run. Doug Pilcher walked and stole his second base of the day but was stranded.
After great plays in the field by Colin Cook at first, and Dan Portschy at third, Eric Binder singled to open the sixth, Grez reached on a fielders choice stole second and advanced on Berdelle's walk to complete a perfect day at the plate.
When Tom Schultz walked to the plate manager Andy waved to Coach Dorrance and Coach Witt who went through a series of signs and called for the cue shot play. Schultz responded by hitting a spinning ball toward the Proviso dugout that mysteriously spun to the left crossed over the dirt and spun to a stop between the mound and first to the surprise of the Proviso team and the applause of the coaching staff. Lind followed with a sac fly to right and Biz singled in the slaughter run and sent the parents and players home in a celebratory mood.
The Senior Class left the field with memories of a great season featuring come-from-behind victories over LT, the Oak Park scout game and the racoon game, lifetime friendships and stories.
Having won the conference as sophomores and a Regional as juniors the Devils want more and are hungry for the state tournament to begin.
The pitching is great, the Devil D strong and the hitting awesome. The Devils are hot...on to victory.
THANK YOU SENIORS. GOOD LUCK IN ALL YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS. YOU WILL BE MISSED
