Mustangs Top Red Devils 8-5
After scoring two quick runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, it looked like the Run Devils were on their way to victory. Unfortunately, the Mustangs settled down and eventually won 8-5.
The Red Devils’ starting pitcher, Dan Portschy, pitched two innings, giving up a total of 1 hit and 1 run on a solo home run by Wunderlich in the top of the 2nd inning. Portschy left the game with the Red Devils leading 3-1. Connor Lind led off for the Red Devils in the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple and scored on Dustin Reznicek’s double. Reznicek eventually scored on Garrett Sosnovich’s ground-out to second base to end the Red Devils’ scoring in the inning. The Red Devils’ lone score in the 2nd inning resulted from Colin Cook’s solo home run to right field, giving the Red Devils a 3-1 lead.
The Mustangs started their comeback in the top of the 3rd inning. Alex Bellusci came in to pitch for the Red Devils and Enright, the first batter he faced, singled. Gilreath then homered to tie the score at 3-3. Bellusci then pitched well holding the Mustangs scoreless for the rest of the inning. Brett Morse made a beautiful diving catch on a line drive down the right field line for the final out of the inning. During the next four innings, Tim Connelly had two doubles and Tom Schultz and Will Lamb each singled. Unfortunately, the rest of the Red Devils’ bats cooled off and they failed to score any runs. Worse yet, the Mustangs took advantage of the Red Devils’ offensive drought. In the top of the 4th inning, Gullry led off with a single. Bellusci then struck out Enright and got Gilreath to ground out to shortstop. Bellusci then walked the next two batters to load the bases. At this point, Drew Bailey came in to pitch for the Red Devils with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Dubler hit a double down the right field line clearing the bases and giving the Mustangs a 6-3 lead. Dubler was thrown at third while trying to stretch his double into a triple. In the top of the 5th inning, the Mustangs scored 1 run on Wunderlich’s lead-off home-run, his second of the game. Bailey then retired the next three batters he faced, striking out Gullry for the third out. In the top of the 6th inning, the Mustangs scored their final run when Enright reached base on an error and later scored on Dubler’s double.
In the top of the 7th inning, Kevin Quirke came in to pitch for the Red Devils and retired the only three batters he faced, striking out Gullry for the third out.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, it looked like the Red Devils had the makings of a comeback. With one out, Colin Cimala hit a 400’ plus home run to centerfield to energize the Red Devils. Mike Grzelakowski then immediately followed with a single. Bellusci then walked and Will Lamb singled to right field to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Red Devils rally ended with the tying run on base and the players and their loyal fans went home with a loss.
