The Devils Have Their Due(ks)
Seriously folks, you'd think this was the final game of the College World Series. The York Dukie stadium was packed full of fans and armed with every coed weighing over 185. The attire du Jour was sleeveless t shirts, headbands and eyeblack. Fans had fog horns and even signs to hold up which carried the letter "K".
With The Devils playing before their biggest crowd of the year, little did the Dukie fans realize that the Devils wanted this game in the worst way. So Dukies, put away the fog horns, put away the "K" signs and use your intellectual capital and figure out how to stop the Devils.
The Devils surged to an early lead in the first off hits from Eric Wroble, Jack Dinardo and Jack Nicholson. With the score 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Kevin Beirich took the mound. He struck out the side (two looking) and Hinsdale fans made a tender offer for the Dukie "K" signs but were declined.
In the second, things got interesting. Bill Rush walked, Taylor Weil doubled, Wroble doubled, Brett Suchy doubled, Kris Leksas singled, Nicholson singled and Dean Pitcher singled. Somewhere in this barrage, York changed pitchers, the fans cooled down, fog horns were not heard and the Devils logged five big ones.
In the bottom of the frame, Beirich remained perfect, three up, three down.
The Devils continued to beat up the Dukies in the third. Looking to go up by a touchdown, Rush singled, Weil executed a nice sac bunt and Suchy doubled to score the rambling Rush to put the Devils up 7-0.
Beirich remained perfect through three and the fog horns continued to be silent.
With the Devils looking to put this one out of reach, they broke the huddle with another surprise inning. With the scorebook already looking like an 747 assembly manual, Da Yardo led off with a double, Nicholson doubled scoring Dinardo, Pitcher walked, Carl 'Go Ahead Make' Madej reached on an error, Rush reached on an error, twenty Dukie fans sheepishly snuck out of the back gate, Suchy singled, Dinardo singled, Nicholson walks, Suchy steals home, ten more fans escape and the Devils are up by two touchdowns 14-0.
In the bottom of the inning, York tried to rally as the lead off hitter singled ruining Beirich's no-no. A horn was heard but it was a car at the St. Charles Rd. intersection. The next hitter lined a shot to "Sockless" Drew Wills in center who made a great catch and doubled off the errant Dukie at first. Beirich fanned the final hitter in the frame. Six more Dukie fans slipped out behind the concession stand...hard to go unnoticed with green headbands bearing skull and crossbones and a face full of dripping eyeblack.
The fifth was the backbreaker. Beirich continued to retire Dukies and held them scoreless to preserve the shutout.
Nice job Devils. Now it's off to Proviso East to face the Pirates! Go get em mateys.
