What a Finish!
Clouds were rolling in and the winds were beginning to pick up. The temperatures were falling but the Devils were heated up. Look out Dukies, we got lefty junkballer Bill Rush on the mound and with a bold west wind, Rush’s curve was moving like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Rush and the Devil lads were ready to roll.
York, ala game one, came out smoking with two runs in the top of the first. In the Devil half of the frame, Brett Suchy was hit by a pitch. Grigola pinch ran as Suchy needed some of the ice left over from the Oak Park series. Eric Wroble singled and Jack Dinardo walked. With the bases juiced, Frank Defino sacrificed and Grigola scored the lone run of the inning.
York countered with one run in each of the second and third innings. The fourth frame was uneventful. However, this author observed the York fourth inning from the cat bird seat in the Devil Diner and watched Rush’s curve continue to dance like a butterfly.
York scored a run in the top of the fifth and it looked as though York was beginning to measure Rush’s stuff too well. Rush gave way to Kevin Beirich in the sixth but not before seven strikeouts. The Devil fifth was exciting as ten Devils came to the plate. Leksas walked, Grigola walked Wroble singled, Defino walked, Jack Nicholson walked scoring Grigola and Wroble, Madej singled scoring Nicholson and Taylor Reznicek singled scoring Madej. A four run fifth and the Devils were knotted at five.
Beirich now trying to collar the rabid Dukes, retired the first two hitters. Beirich just missed striking out the third hitter looking but the ball was a bit outside (looked good to all Hinsdale fans). The wheels got a bit wobbly after that and the Dukes mustered up three runs to go up 8 to 5. The Devils were held scoreless in the in the bottom of the sixth despite a one out single by Dinardo.
Beirich took the mound in the seventh possessed. He got the first hitter to ground out to Madej at second and K’d the next two hitters giving him three for the game and 22 K’s on the day for Devil pitchers.
Now the finish. Trailing by three, Madej reached on an error, Dean Pitcher singled, Leksas was hit by a pitch (no ice required), Suchy singled to left scoring Madej, Wroble singled scoring Pitcher and Leksas to tie the game at eight. With Suchy on third and Wroble on first, the Dukies intentionally walked Dinardo to load the bases with two outs in order to take their chances against Defino. With emotions running deep, Defino smacked an outside pitch to right field to score Suchy as the Devils bruise the Duke ego in a 9-8 come from behind victory.
The rubber match is Tuesday afternoon at York. Get your tickets early.
