SOPHS LIVE UP TO THEIR NAME

With the Devils having two big wins against Addison Trail (A.T.) under their belts, the stage was set for the sweep.  With temperatures in the low 80’s and a slight breeze out of the west, the afternoon had a Caribbean-like atmosphere.

The Devils disembarked the big yellow limo only to discover they forgot to bring their helmets and ball bucket. Not a good move boys. With the Coach hotter than a Stanley Steamer, the afternoon’s ambiance was deflated quicker than an overblown whoopie cushion.

Webster defines sophomore behavior as being overconfident of knowledge but poorly informed and immature. Hmmm, Coach Stan must have had his dictionary in his bat bag as he communicated definition one as well as embellishing on a few others he created along the way. The Devil’s had their work cut out for them.

In the top of the first, Brett Suchy singled and stole second. Jack Dinardo singled to score Suchy putting the Devil’s up 1-0.  A.T. stormed back against fireballer Drew Wills with a run in the first.

Tied at one in the top of the second, Trey Ward singled and advanced on an error, Bill Rush walked and Eric Wroble singled scoring Ward.  A.T. again countered the Devil second inning attack this time with two runs.  A.T. added two more in the fourth before Kevin Beirich came in to relieve Wills.

In the top of the fifth, Wroble singled, Suchy reached on a fielders choice, stole second and scored when Dinardo reached on an error.  The Devils were now down by two and the capacity crowd of 35 was sensing the tension.

Holding A.T. scoreless in the fifth, Carl Madej walked to lead off sixth and Mike Grigola followed with a double.  With runners at 2nd and 3rd and one out, we could not score.

In the top of the seventh, Dinardo walked and Kris Leksas singled. Jack Nicholson laid down a bunt and the A.T. pitcher fired to third yet missed his target allowing Dinardo and Leksas to score.  Nicholson advanced to second on the throw and moved to third on Madej’s sac bunt.  With Taylor Weil at the plate and two outs, a passed ball allowed Nicholson to score the go ahead run.

The crowd was on its feet.  A.T. led off with a single, the next batter reached on an error.  With two on and no one out, we had issues.  Beirich helped his cause striking out the next hitter.  The next Blazer hits a grounder to Madej at second, flips to Suchy at short for one who throws to Rush to complete the game ending double play.  Devils win!

Hats off to the Devils- Oh sorry, we left them at home.  How sophomoric of us.
