*one out when winning run scored
Catcher Grant Slesser’s one-out double in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch runner Troy Laing from second with the winning run as Hinsdale Central beat Glenbard West in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday 5-4. First baseman Richie Brennan led off the seventh with a line single to center. Laing entered the game as a runner for Brennan and promptly stole second setting up Slesser’s game winning hit. Zach Leathers was the winning pitcher. Leathers threw a complete game, overcoming a rocky first inning which saw GBW score two runs on three solid hits. Leathers settled down and scattered four hits over the final six innings, striking out 9 and walking none.
The Red Devils tied the game in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a hit. Three GBW errors allowed two runs to score. Central then took the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out, shortstop Billy Auriemma tripled and then scored on Leathers’ double. Leathers later scored on a ground out by Slesser. The Hilltoppers scored single runs in the 4th and 6th innings to tie the score setting the stage for the seventh inning heroics.
