Red Devils Baseball Club GOLF OUTING 2005 | The Event Summary

Saturday April 17, 2005 --
The Second Annual Hinsdale Baseball Club Tournament was held at Seven Bridges Golf Course.  Thirty-three of Hinsdale’s finest baseball players were accompanied by thirty-three of their parents.  The field was set for a perfect outing.  Sixty-four golfers armed with their tools of torture were destined to dethrone last year’s champions, David and Connor Lind

The conditions were outstanding: Mostly sunny skies after a threat of thundershowers; seventy degree temperature; slight wind from the NE and plenty of Red Devil inscribed golf balls compliments of Gary “Dimples” Rush.

The tournament proved to be very successful due to the solid player/parent turnout and strong support from our sponsors.  The Hinsdale Baseball Tournament Committee and Seven Bridges Golf Professional, Cory Ferrell, worked feverishly for several weeks to ensure proper weather not to mention the little things like managing a day full of fun-filled events and a spirited evening auction which featured two sons bidding against their own fathers.  For all you mothers and wives out there, you would deny the son or husband as being yours so we will let these rabid bidders remain anonymous. We will say however, that auctioneer, Bruce “What am I gonna get for” Bellusci had no problem pitting son against father.

At the time of this writing, golf scores were being audited. Several players offered WorldCom auditors to validate their scorecards yet tourney officials got wise when they witnessed several breaches of golf’s sacred rules.  The breach of the day was a varsity player slicing a brand new bright white Red Devil Ultra 50 feet into water on hole #2.  Player finds a mud-soaked alabaster PRO V-1 next to the embankment and calmly pretends it is his.  This is the classic, “I found it technique” and is detectable only by the most savvy and suspicious playing partners.   Don’t order yet.  Player then proceeds to find a good lie for his new treasure and props it up like a tee ball on Viagra.    Laying just a wedge shot from the green, he shoots another ball into the water (justice prevails) but his father plops a beauty to the center of the green.  Ah, the luxury of best ball twosomes.

Now, for the skill event winners.  The two parent closest to the pin winners were Mike “The Sniper” Dahl on hole #6 and Jim “On the Money” Noth on hole #10. Dr. Noth, sworn to keep the Oath of Hippocrates, could have used his practitioner skills to help the ill-fated golfers of Seven Bridges. The player closet to the pin contest on hole #10 was won by Jack “The Ripper” Nicholson.

The muscle of Bill “Andro” Auriemma Sr. and Dan “Check out my Pecs” Portschy allowed them to take home the respective parent and player longest drive awards.   The longest putt awards were won by parent Gregg “Midas Touch” Sosnovich and the player award was given to Bill “Left Wing” Rush.  Billy was the only liberal allowed to play in the tournament because Hinsdale Baseball Club bylaws declare that the organization is an equal opportunity hacker association.

The straightest drive competition was fierce.  Many inquiries were raised as to what constituted a straight drive but many were quickly dismissed by Pro Cory Ferrell.  A freshman player, to remain nameless for obvious reasons, argued that he hit the straightest ball of the contest.  When Cory was carted out to attest the frosh shot, he discovered that the ball rested beautifully in the middle of the fairway…..two fairways south.  Cory, no fool to the trickeries of golf tournament scams, ruled that the shot did not qualify and promptly called the players geometry teacher and made sure he was relieved of any banked extra credit points this semester.

The actual winners of the straightest drive competition were parent Jim” The Ruler” Weil and player Brett “Line Dancer” Suchy.  Brett Suchy is now a two-time champion of this event. Will he capture a third in ’06 or will he “fade”?

One of the least recognized awards in today’s tournament circuit is the net bag weight award.  Many tournament directors now require all participants to weigh their bags prior to the competition.  At the 18th green the bag is weighed again.  The player with the biggest net difference wins.  This year’s prestigious net bag weight award is given to sophomore Trey “Row My Boat Ashore” Ward.  Trey set a tournament record losing 17 balls in the water, a nine iron, a bottle of Off insect repellant and his Popeil Pocket Fisherman.  The net weight reduction was nearly 6 pounds.  Nice job Trey.

In all, a great time was had by everyone involved.  This author woke up the next day and couldn’t determine which muscle group was taxed the most.  Was it the lower back from excessive swings or the abdominal region from laughter.  It really didn’t matter- no pain, no gain.

On a more serious note, we all gained.  The Hinsdale Central Baseball Club raised enough capital to support its annual mission and to build and maintain the new Red Devil Baseball website, www.RedDevilBaseball.com. The site is now the envy of most high school athletic sites in the country.  The batting cages installed on the southwest end of the varsity baseball field are also a product of the Hinsdale Baseball Club and its supporters.

We want to thank our sponsors and participants who have made this all possible and ensure all of you that all the beneficiaries of the program will continue to work hard and make you proud of such a strong and vibrant organization.

Thanks again, and may the golf gods be with you.
